Resolve to Set Attainable Goals This New Year

Now that the holidays are behind us, and the New Year has begun, it’s time to start thinking about your vision for a successful 2010.

While it’s no secret that each one of us has a different idea of what it means to be successful with different end goals in sight, most of us should use the same approach when it comes to setting our goals and actually reaching them.

Setting goals should be about more than making vague statements such as “I will lose weight this year” or “I will start exercising.” Goal-setting actually means creating a written plan that includes reasonable and attainable long-term and short-term objectives.

By setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, you should be able to attain your objectives because your goals will be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed.

Consider the following when setting your long- and short-term goals this new year:

  • Specific. Often when we set a goal, it’s nearly impossible to figure out if we’ve met them or not because they’re vague. Goals should be specific so that you’ll know if you’ve reached them. Consider saying, “I’ll lose five pounds this month” instead of simply, “I’ll lose weight.” At the end of the month, get on the scale to determine if you’ve met your goal.
  • Measurable. You should be able to measure your goal. For example, many of us want to increase the number of days per week that we exercise. But, “exercising more” is an unclear statement. A simple, concrete goal would be “I will exercise four days each week this month.” This makes it easy to see if you hit your target.
  • Achievable. Goals should be reasonable and achievable. For example, losing 15 pounds in a week is unrealistic for most people. Losing one to two pounds a week is reasonable. Don’t set yourself up for failure by setting goals that aren’t within reach.
  • Realistic. Most of us have the ability to realize that while we can achieve a lot, there are some things we cannot physically do. For example, you may love to play tennis in your spare time, but do you have the time or talent to become a Wimbledon star? Be honest with yourself and set realistic goals.
  • Timed. All goals should have a time frame in which to reach them. Many of us talk about what we want to do someday, but without an end date, there is no sense of urgency leaving room for excuses about how we can put off action for a later date. Make sure you attach a specific time frame to reach your goal so that you’ll have ammunition to get started and motivation to monitor your progress.

Realize that goal-setting is more than deciding what you want to do. You must also figure out what you need to do to get you where you want to go and determine how long it will take you to get there.

Always set reasonable goals, be your own best friend by knowing when to slow down and don’t set yourself up for failure. Consider your goals your road map " as long as you follow them " even if you have to detour once or twice"you’ll get to your final destination.
